How the czech music magazines contributed to the process of comercionalization of electronic dance music?

This diploma thesis deals with the role of a printed music media in the process of commercialization of electronic dance music in the Czech Republic in the early 2000s. The research is based on the theoretical approach of subcultural studies, more specifically on the Chicago school. The theoretical part is focused on the definition of terms such as subculture, moral panic, subcultural capital and commercialization. The empirical part is focused on qualitative research of selected media, consisting of content analysis of contemporary periodicals and semi-structured interviews with selected media editors. In total, 134 issues were analyzed and four interviews were conducted with respondents as part of the research. The results show the role of selected magazines as subcultural media, which significantly contributed to the development of electronic dance music in our country. Using the obtained results, the work defines the main events and meanings by which the selected media influenced the dance music scene of that time. 1

The theme of popular music in regional newspapers of contemporary Karlovy Vary region in the period 1957-1967

The dissertation Topic of popular music in the local press of contemporary Karlovy Vary region in the period 1957 - 1967 attempts to capture the process of official views presented in the regional press between the years 1957 - 1967 in the territory of today's Karlovy Vary Region on various genres of modern music, represented by mainstream dance music which later evolved into popular music. Articles, reviews and critiques relevant to modern music published in newspapers in area of Karlovy Vary and specialist publications dedicated to particular cultural issues in the region was used for the research. Furthermore, it was primarily jazz and rock music in Czechoslovakia known as big beat (bigbít). The introduction deals with the theoretical and methodological issues appropriate to the topic and their possible use. The next part deals with the social and cultural context in Czechoslovakia at that time, the influence of ideology on culture and simultaneously on releasing in art and society during the 1960s. An overview of contextualization within postwar (World War II) official press, the situation regarding modern music in Karlovy Vary regional press in the period 1948 - 1956 and also archival documents that are related to the topic of work are mentioned in the second part. The beginnings of clubbing in Prague

This piece of work was meant to be countinuous to my bachelor's thesis. In that essay I was dealing with the history of Czech electronic dance music in general. This time I focused just on Prague and surrounding area. The Czech capital was deeply influenced by presence of tourists. After the Velvet revolution, they were suddenly able to visit Prague. And as they they were already familiar with electronic music, they could help to spread it here. The situation in Prague is also compared with the rest of the world (western civilization). In the first part of the essay, I describe the qualitative research and the method I have used, which is the oral history. I also enclose a brief vocabulary of frequently used terms that are not very well known to the greater audience, I suppose. The last part is the analysis of the interviews itself. The interviews were done with important narrators.

Electronic dance scene as a picture of the lifestyle

This thesis examines the phenomenon of youth entertainment - electronic dance music - within the last three decades. Since the end of the 1980s, this experimental music has developed into a recognized music genre worldwide. Stemming from experimental music are tens of differentiated sub-genres. I studied the three main genres of electronic dance music: freetekno, drum and bass, and house music; and describe their structural elements: idea, music, space, drugs, and dance. In addition, this thesis reveals conclusions from my anthropological research. My research method consisted of using participatory observation, interviews and questionaires. The research was based on the following hypothesis: Fans of each three subgenres (freetekno, drum and bass, and house) mutually differentiate not only on an economic and social level, but also in the realm of life attitudes. The theoretical basis of my work derives from Victor Turner´s theory of communitas which was published in his book, The Ritual Process, in 2004.
